Dental Sealants Protect Your Teeth from Caries
Our teeth naturally has deep grooves and fissures that are perfect breeding ground for bacteria to grow. To protect your teeth from tooth decay, dental sealants are used to seal the deep grooves and fissures of teeth so that when chewing, food and bacteria does not infiltrate the tooth. Oral bacteria can penetrate into the hard tissues of your teeth and spread infection. When coatings of sealants are applied on the surfaces of your teeth, the protective covering helps preserve the health of your smile.
Dental Sealants Process
Dental sealants can be clear or white depending on the type of sealant used by your dentist.
Before application, the teeth are cleaned thoroughly first, washed and dried. Next an acidic gel solution is placed over the fissures and grooves of the teeth then rinsed off after a few moments and dried. Then a few coats of sealant are painted on the teeth surface. After a minute, the sealant dries and hardens. When this happens, the patient is released and given a few tips on how to properly care for his sealed teeth.
Dental sealants can last up to for years with proper dental home care and regular check-up with the dentist. If the sealants have chipped or have been dislodged from your teeth, a new application will be needed.
