The periodontium refers to the structures in the mouth that function to support the teeth and these are the gums, the periodontal ligaments, the cementum and the alveolar bone. These structures have to remain healthy because together they provide stability for the teeth within the jaw bone. A few symptoms of a possible periodontal problem are bleeding and receding gums.
Plaque is the main culprit for gum disease. Plaque builds on the surface of the teeth on a daily basis. Your oral hygiene practices are supposed to clean the teeth of the plaque build-up but if your effort fails, plaque accumulates and it calcifies. This condition is reversible and it is called, Gingivitis. If the bacteria is allowed to spread deeper into the tissues, soft tissue attachment is lost and bone support is compromised.
